I´m back

Posted on 18th February, 2012

Ahoyhoy,

Hope you´re well. I am pissed off having spent the last hour doing this blog and then accidentally lost the whole thing ARRRGGGH.

Anyway I´ll do each day separately to reduced my potential future frustration.

I left El Calafate determined to make it through the Ruta 40 ripio to Perito Moreno the town and I did but alas Sir Humphrey went down 4 times. Now I am not the shitest biker in the world and only one was my fault. Its not just excuses honestly!!! Read on....

I had diverted onto a tract of road to be (i.e drove through the diversion signs to aid my passiong a string of lorries and earth moving equipement) and promptly ran out of soon to be road. I was on soft sand with a huge digger blocking my way and mountains of sand either side. As I cannot multitask I came to a complete stop to consider my options only for this to be too much for my little brain and I unbalanced and Sir Humphrey fel over from a stand still. That was silly but doing the same thing 40 yards later. thats just stupid!

Nevertheless up we got, eventually. I had to remove a lot of his kit as I can´t lift him up when on sand. Now the thing about some ripio is that the gravel is very deep but has often been pushed into long dunes which you avoid by diligently sticking to the ruts from cars and lorries. It takes all one´s concentration to do this and has already been prooved I don´t have a lot of it and yes I did take my eyes off the road for 2 seconds, the dune grabbed the front tyre and I almost made it through after 40yards of fishtailing but eventually we went down, second crash of the trip. I had a bruised knee and Sir Humphrey has cosmetic damage, his panniers match better now his fallen on both sides. the picture below is after I had picked him up and just before the wind blew him over whilst I took the picture! What a day.

But it was pretty.

On reaching the first petrol station for over 300miles I met two Aussies going from Alaska to Antartica and a German just mooching around all on BMWs. The petrol station had no petrol so the Aussies loaned the German some and we set off for the last push to Perito Moreno. I made it 40miles into the red! A quick nosh and kip in a campsite shed (or Cabana) and we went our separate ways in the morning.
