Ahoyhoy,
Sorry to be away for so along. No internet on the river!
I think I left you in Oyapock on the French Guyane - Brazilian border after a half day crossing the river frontier. The view at breakfast was a good start to the day:
Alas it promptly started to rain so I started moist and got wetter. The legendarily bad road was fine by my current standards - a bad road but didn´t cause me any major problems.
The problemns were the potholes, can´t avoid them all, jiggling the battery connectors loose which was not the biggest kicks and giggles in the pouring rain under Sir Humphrey with a spanner. Pretty as ever though.
Nevertheless progress was made until there was a hiccup with a bridge, there wasn´t enough of it as the far side land had slid away.
Once the Hilux had minced around for a bit the intrepid explorers blasted over the 5`` board in style but alas noone cheered. After I can´t remember how long the sand road gave up trying to slow us down and it was tarmac all the way to Macapa.
During the 370miles it was dry for 30mins which did a number on my summer riding gloves who passed this onto my hands.
In Macapa I spent the evening of this Good Friday down on the prom walking the pier which was lovely. I particually enjoyed watchiing the kite surfers fall over. It sooned turned black and it was no better in the hotel as my shower seemed to have blown the whole building´s power. Anyway next day I managed to record passing over the equator but alas again missed the equator monument. Why do they hide these things?
The port isn´t in Macapa at all but is hidden in the next town aloing, Santana. I eventually found the port and, because of the easter weeker, had to take two boats over 42hrs to get to Belem.
I am now being thrown out of my 2nd internet place today. I´ll try to get back to you.
